ADTSEA-FL Endorses New Model Florida Driver Education Curriculum
The Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition has released the Model Florida Driver Education Curriculum, a forward-looking framework designed to improve driver education statewide. The curriculum can be explored at:
https://flteensafedriver.org/model-driver-education-curriculum/
The ADTSEA-FL Board of Directors has formally endorsed this model curriculum, recognizing it as a critical step toward elevating instructional quality, aligning with national best practices, and supporting safer teen driving outcomes in Florida.
This curriculum was developed by the Coalition’s Driver Education Subcommittee, which includes several active ADTSEA-FL members who provided professional expertise throughout the drafting process. Their work represents a collaborative effort among educators, policymakers, and traffic safety advocates to modernize how driver education is delivered and supported in the state.
Importantly, the model curriculum is intended as a blueprint for the Florida Department of Education to update the course description of Driver Education/Traffic Safety-Classroom 1900300. The new model was developed to offer expanded version requirements that align with contemporary traffic safety research and national curriculum frameworks.
While the model curriculum represents a strong foundation, it does not yet include structured guidance on two key areas:
- Inclusion of classroom, range, and in-vehicle components
- Support for professional development and instructional consistency
These two priorities are essential to fully realizing high-quality, equitable driver education across Florida. ADTSEA-FL will continue working in partnership with the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition to ensure these components are infused into future iterations of the model curriculum—particularly as updates are developed for Driver Education/Traffic Safety-Classroom and Laboratory 1900310 and instructional support resources are expanded for 1900300.
This endorsement underscores ADTSEA-FL’s commitment to strengthening Florida’s driver education system, advocating for comprehensive instructional standards, and supporting educators who prepare the next generation of safe drivers.
