Turning Collaboration into Ownership

Florida’s Driver Education leaders met for the second statewide DEACOS Driving Conversation to strengthen collaboration, share resources, and advance sustainable Driver Education across Florida’s 67 counties.

Key Topics

  • School Zone Speed Detection Funds: Discussion of Florida Statute §316.1896 and using school-zone speed detection penalties to support Driver Education. Members shared progress and local strategies to pursue interlocal agreements.
  • Model Curriculum & Resource Collection: The FDOT-sponsored Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition is building an open library of lessons, videos, and assessments aligned to newly defined Version Requirements. Attendees were invited to serve as resource “champions.”
  • Statewide Teacher Training: Broad support for modernized professional development for certified Driver Education instructors, coordinated through ADTSEA-FL and the Coalition.
  • DOE Engagement: The group identified the need for regular participation from the Florida Department of Education (Office of Healthy Schools) in future meetings.
  • Celebrations: Miami-Dade’s program growth was highlighted, including expansion of active driving ranges and certified instructors.

  • Contribute Resources: Share lessons, videos, quizzes, and assessments aligned to the Coalition’s Version Requirements.
  • Professional Development: Help shape statewide PD topics (range operations,  simulators, and more).
  • Invite DOE: Encourage DOE contacts to participate in upcoming sessions.
