Florida Teen Driver Survey: What Teens Say They Need From Driver Education

Rolling results since May 2025 • 150+ responses and growing

ADTSEA-FL is listening to Florida’s teens. Since May 2025, we’ve invited young people to describe the ideal way to learn to drive—what would genuinely make them confident and capable behind the wheel. We now have 150+ responses, and our goal is to reach 1,000+ statewide. These insights will guide how we advise improvements to Driver Education and traffic safety instruction across Florida.

What we’re hearing from teens

  • Make learning engaging. Teens ask for short videos, interactive checks, and scenario-based lessons—rather than long blocks of text or lectures.
  • Build confidence, not just seat time. Repetition of tricky tasks until they feel truly comfortable.
  • Get hands-on early and often. Real practice matters, paired with calm coaching that reduces anxiety.
  • Use simulation wisely. Practice higher-risk scenarios (weather, night driving, emergencies) in a simulator before the road.
  • Keep it practical. Parking/parallel-parking reps, night/highway exposure, and simple real-life skills help a lot.

In their words (student quotes)

“More interactive parts so it breaks up all the reading.”

“The best way to teach my friend and me to drive would be hands-on teaching.”

“Explain it step by step—that’s the best way to gain confidence.”

“A calm experience with a supportive instructor makes it easier to focus.”

“I want more practice with parking.”

“Simulated activities are better for learning some situations first.”
